When & how did you learn to needlepoint?

The "shop mom" stitched this jointed circus elephant.

The "shop mom" stitched this jointed circus elephant.

My sister Betsy taught me to needlepoint when I was 12 or 13 years old.  My first project was a dragon that I had gotten specially painted by Needlepoint Inc.  I later taught my mother to needlepoint, as well.  Many of the original Needle Arts owners still refer to her as the "shop mom" because she was always in the shop in the first few years.

What is your favorite project you've ever done?

My favorite project is probably a geometric pillow I did years ago.  It was right when we first got someone to do really good finishing for us, and I just love how it came out.  There's also a cow pillow that has a special place in my heart.  It was painted colors that I didn't care for and I changed them and was particularly pleased with the way they turned out.

What is your favorite way to use embellishment stitches and which one do you use most often?

I don't think I could pick one stitch I use the most often, but I think my favorite way to use them would be to add texture to clothing.

What is your favorite hobby besides needlepoint & knitting?

When I'm not stitching, I'm usually either in my garden or playing cards.

When & how did you learn to needlepoint?

I learned to needlepoint 35 years ago at Needleworks on Tulane Ave.  I don't remember exactly what I stitched, but I know it was something they suggested for beginners.  I immediately gave it away to my maid.

My favorite project was a lotus flowers canvas.  I picked out the canvas because our finisher had been doing some wonderful pillows with embroidered frog clasps and I wanted a pillow finished that way.  The canvas definitely lent itself to this style of finishing.

I don't use embellishment stitches very often, but I did a floral canvas years ago and Vickie helped me pick out stitches for the petals.  It's definitely my favorite embellished piece.
